Clad metal
Clad metal refers to a material that is formed by applying pressure to roll together the surface of one metal and the surface of another metal (usually a different type of metal).
Since it is possible to join dissimilar metals, we can create functions that cannot be obtained from a single metal. For example, by rolling together a metal with a high coefficient of thermal expansion and a metal with a low coefficient, we can induce thermal deformation in the metal. This principle is applied in thermostat bimetals. Additionally, it is also possible to create combinations of materials that have improved corrosion resistance. By using a small amount of expensive metal and a larger amount of inexpensive metal, it is possible to reduce the material cost. It is also possible to combine metals with good electrical conductivity and those with high strength to overcome issues related to insufficient strength.
